See How They Run (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (July, 1999)
Author: Bethany Campbell
Average review score:

You can't stop reading
Since I started to read this book I just couldn't, stop doing it, is an amazing suspense story from the first page till the last page, and the way that Montana fights against the bad guys is not out of reality at all, meanwhile you learn a little bit of autism boys.

GOOD SUSPENSE
This book got better and better as the pages flew by and tension mounted... Eight year old autistic twins, Rickie and Trace, attended a special school........while out in the school playground with their teacher, Laura Stoner, they witnessed an elderly man getting gunned down right in front of them!! As with most autistics, they had a gift for details with numbers.....they repeated the license plate number, how many shots were fired, and described the murderer.......what they had witnessed was the execution of a mafia don.... Ex-cop turned assistant U.S. attorney, Mike Montana, was in charge of protecting both Laura and the twins....Laura had no option other than to trust him while he moved them around from one state to another, running from the villains and not knowing who in the US government, has betrayed them!! This story will have you holding your breath when the good guys confront the bad guys!!

If you are getting a little weary of Mary Higgins Clark ....
I say it again -- if you are getting a little weary of Mary Higgins Clark, then try Bethany Campbell's thrillers. I picked this one up out of the blue (on a whim) and was hooked from page one. Well drawn characters, a very tense plot, and plenty of empathy for people who are coping with children with problems. Any mother or teacher can relate to this book, and be carried along by a fast moving, credible plot as well. Bethany Campbell's publishers should be promoting her like crazy, because there is a heap of talent in this lady.

A Snowflake in My Hand (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (July, 1995)
Author: Samantha Mooney
Average review score:

"Quality of Life" for the Heart and Mind
The affecting cover painting drew me to buy this book, and it changed my life--I'm not exaggerating. I ended up requiring it for my college "Psychology of Loss" class and recommending it to my "People & Animals" class. Samantha Mooney grasps the preciousness and depth of each cat's life as she recalls the feline personalities she met on the animal cancer ward where she worked. Better than any professional manual I've read, Mooney's deceptively slim volume presents the issue of an animal's "quality of life," and its place at the core of deciding whether and when to euthanize a beloved, sick companion animal. Blending genuine emotion with her professional commitment to care and assistance, Mooney captures the fragility of these brief lives--like snowflakes melting in the warmth of the human hand that would save their beauty and uniqueness--these brief lives that share and change our own. I came to love every cat remembered in these pages as I read and reread them, particularly Fledermaus, Mooney's tiny, mysterious friend, who has affected Mooney most of all. I passionately recommend this gem of a book to any reader interested not only in cats and any of the animals with whom we share the world, but also anyone who must deal with questions about the meaning and quality of life, the possibilities and limits of medical care, and the ways we risk love--and face grief in the wake of loss. I treasure my dog-eared (!) copy of "A Snowflake in My Hand," and though I wish I knew Samantha Mooney personally, still I feel I have gotten to know her as well as the cats in her life, and to feel they are friends. As long as we keep our loved ones in memory, we do not lose them.

A Compassionate Work Eloquently Authored
The author worked for 10 years on the eighth floor of New York's famous Animal Medical Center - the eighth floor housing the cancer clinic.

All animal people will be deeply moved and inspired by Ms. Mooney's story of cats approaching a prolonged painful death. The little cats she came to know so well through their illnesses, will bring smiles amidst tears with the felines' courage, patience and spiritedness as they face each day living with a terminal illness. This small slim book is filled with warmth and sensitivity of inspiring lessons in human love, joy, loss, and triumph over grief.

You will cry, smile, laugh, it's wonderful, you'll love it
I have not read the book only listened to the tape (the book is on back order). I and my wife have a deep and long time love for our 6 (yes six) cats and these tapes only served to not only deepen those feelings but to better understand how our lives are so much better because of them. I also work with students in the field of patient care (people patients)and will use this set of tapes to help them better understand those patients that they will be working with once out of school. If we are able to give unconditional love for others the way cats give there love.... oh what a wonderful world it would be.

Sun Mountain: A Comstock Memoir
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Forge (August, 2002)
Author: Richard S. Wheeler

Wheeler Hits the Motherlode in Virginia City
I discovered Richard Wheeler a month ago. What a great discovery! He's an intelligent novelist who develops rich characters and weaves his narrative into the history of the old west. He educates and entertains.

Sun Mountain is an excellent read and strongly recommended. Learn about Virginia City, Nevada during its heyday. And what a heyday it had! Its roots are solidly in the pre-railroad days when everything had to be hauled hundreds and hundreds of arduous miles over the Sierras from California during the early days of that state. Then came the railroads and transformed Virginia City, as they transformed every town they touched. Wheeler instructs the reader on the Comstock Lode and the technological innovations developed there that changed mining around the world. He deftly covers the full gamut of human nature and existence in such a place at such a time.

If you have yet to read a Richard Wheeler novel, Sun Mountain is an excellent place to start.

A new view of the Comstock Lode
The book says the author was Richard S.Wheeler. The real Author was a man by the name of Dickey Dey. For many years he was the private secretary of Mr. John Mackay.

This really an interesting report on the working of Virginia City and more about the people and characters that lived there than it is about mining.

A must read for all fans of the Comstock Lode.

Sun Mountain is a pleasure to read.
At last: a historical novel with a sense of humor. Undeniably acknowledged as a master storyteller and flawless in his knowledge of the historical West, Wheeler fully unveils yet another talent from his already amazing repretoire: humor. While the real stars of Sun Mountain are the Virginia City's silver mines, narrator Henry Stoddard nearly steals the show with his sly perceptions of the city's inhabitants and his inept campaign to leave bachelorhood in a near womanless town. His search to find true love and the city's innovations to unearth its riches made me smile-one with affection, the other with admiration.

Uplift: Secrets from the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (December, 2001)
Author: Barbara Delinsky
Average review score:

triumphant uplifting inspirational
Known for her strong dramas and her incredible publication rate, Barbara Delinsky has written her best work ever with this uplifting work of nonfiction. UPLIFT: SECRETS FROM THE SISTERHOOD OF BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS is a lot more than just a self-help guide though that is a major part of the book. Ms. Delinsky and friends provides "secrets that their respective doctors and others never told them about in their personal fight with breast cancer, a disease that played on the psyche of most of the participants. In the case of Ms. Delinsky she also had the haunting memory of her mom's death from this potential killer.

Part angst, part strategy, part belonging (an open invitation to join this courageous survivor's club) the book is loaded with anecdotal tales from survivors of the war. The optimistic tips will buoy the individual ready to do battle on how to take control of one's life instead of the physician, well meaning family members, or the illness running the show. Delinsky and the other veterans earn purple hearts as they furbish a triumphant uplifting inspirational tale that gives hope not just to breast cancer victims, but anyone facing the horrors of a devastating potentially deadly disease.

Harriet Klausner

Helpful book for those just diagnosed with breast cancer
If you have just been diagnosed with breast cancer, get this book. It has hundreds of tips and suggestions from those who have been through it. These are the things that your doctors can't tell you about, because few of them have actually experienced it. Author Barbara Delinsky invited breast cancer survivors to share their best tips and stories. Some of them are quite funny, but you'd have to be "one of the sisterhood" to understand. I first checked it out from the library, but decided I had to have my own copy. I will refer to it frequently during this next year, when I am under treatment for early-stage BC.

Memories
What a terrific and enlightening manual of information. The book helped me to remember my daughter's diagnoses, surgery and chemo back in March of '94. She was 38, a single Mom, had a huge faith in God and a sense of humor that wouldn't quit! Thank you Barbara for this book. Every woman should read it, whether she is a survivor, just diagnosed or a woman with empathy for what others think, feel and experience during their healing. Wouldn't hurt a bit for the men to read UPLIFT too.

Barrier-Free Travel: A Nuts and Bolts Guide for Wheelers and Slow Walkers

It Helped Us
My wife had a stroke four years ago and now has to use a wheelchair. We both wanted to travel bur I didn't know the first place to look to find out the things we needed to know. The physical therapist said lots of people who have had strokes travel, so we wanted to give it a try. But it was hard to find information. That's where this book helped. It contains a lot of information you need. It should be titled "owners manual" as nobody tells you this stuff when you end up in a wheelchair.

The cruise chapter was very helpful to me. I just figured I could call up a travel agent and book a cruise with a handicapped cabin. I'm glad I read the book before I made that mistake. There is also a very helpful chapter about choosing a travel agent and how to travel on an airplane with a wheelchair.

We just got back from our first cruise and it was great. I wouldn't have been able to do it without this book. If you are even only thinking about travel, I urge you to read this book. We are already planning our next trip.

Barrier-Free Travel Saved Me (money)
I highly recommend this book to anybody considering traveling with a wheelchair. I bought this book before my vacation back east and it helped me understand my rights as a consumer. It also gave me helpful tips on how to get the services I need.

For example, did you know that hotels that provide free airpot shuttle service (in the US) also have to provide an accessible option, at no charge to the customer? Well, I didn't -- until I read this book.

A hotel in Boston tried to charge me for this service, but because I read this book, I knew the law and was able to deal with the situation. The result was that I saved (money), and the hotel had to provide me with free accessible airport shuttle service.

That's just one of the helpful tips that I found in Barrier-Free Travel.

This book also contains useful information about how to find and book an accessible room, how to work with (and find) a travel agent, cruises, ground transportation, overseas travel, advocacy, disability law and rights, air travel, protecting your wheelchair when you travel, and resources around the world.

It's a book that I will keep and continue to refer to, as I continue to travel. It makes a great resource book -- I wish more CIL's would add this to their resource library.

Don't Leave Home Without This Book!
This is the best how-to guide about accessible travel that I have ever read. I've been traveling for over 10 years in my wheelchair, and this book contains helpful information and resources that I never knew existed.

Every time I pick up a book about accessible travel, it contains all the same trite information. Of course this book is just the opposite. It contains useful information. I don't need to be told to get to the airport early or to remember to pack my medicine. This book covers all the essentials, gives you good solid information and doesn't just give you "common sense" tips. It's the only book on the market that does that.

It's an easy read -- not just a book filled with facts and figures. Real life situations are included in most chapters. The chapter about what to do when things go wrong is one of the most concise and informative advocacy guides I have ever read.

I wish that all travel agents and professionals would read this book too. It's a must for people who travel, but the professionals who plan our vacations also need to know this information!

Best Seat in the House : The Untold Stories of DiMaggio, Mantle, Foreman & Other Sports Legends
Published in Hardcover by Delstar Pub (05 December, 2000)
Author: Dan Wheeler

For anyone who has ever sat thrilled at ringside
Best Seat In The House offers the sports enthusiast a wealth of hitherto published stories of such outstanding sports figures ad Joe DiMaggio, Micky Mantle, George Foreman, and other legendary athletes. Here are fascinating anecdotes featuring Joe Namath, Magic Johnson, Jim Grown, Pete Rose, Shaquille O'Neal, Cal Ripken Jr. and others from Dan Wheeler, a sport fan and broadcaster who spent thousands of hours researching and interviewing these superlative athletes during his twenty year career. Best Seat In The House is a "must read" for anyone who has ever sat thrilled at ringside, or were up in the bleachers cheering their team, or hung on every second of a televised game.

Excellent Read on the Great Legends of Sports!
You here so much about sports legends sometimes you get tired of reading about them...A friend of mine told me this book by Dan Wheeler of QVC was really different...it captured these stars in a real human perspective and suprisingy made them feel more like real people to me than the Icons or Idols the media attempts to build themup to be.....I could not get over the story of Mickey Mantle...One minute I was laughing hysterically....The next I was brought to tears....Very Sad...But it appears The Mick really died in peace! No Doubt, Wheeler knew thse guys like none other in the media....it resonates throughout the book that his relationships were very close with even the great Dimaggio.....I was not a real olympics fan..so I would say that was the only chapter I was not that interested in...But all in all...The best Sport book I ever read! Scott from N.C.

Best Seat in the House: Untold Stories of DiMaggio, Mantle,
As a non-avid sports fan, I enjoyed this book very much. The author did a fine job of relating the personal stories of the names behind the biggest legends of sports. Many people idolize these athletes without realizing that they are simply human beings like the rest of us. I thought the author did a nice job of weaving in stories about his childhood. Readers will also find Wheeler's duties as a QVC show host interesting. I would strongly recommend this book to everyone. It would also make a great gift for a young, aspiring athlete.

Bible as Literature
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1997)
Authors: John B. Gabel and Charles B. Wheeler
Average review score:

Excellent, Non-Sectarian Look at the Bible.
I think that this book is wonderful! I am a student of Dr. Anthony York's and we have utilized this book in our classes. The Bible As Literature discusses the Bible in a manner that helps the reader actually read what is/was written without all the religious jargon. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about "The Bible" or to anyone who thinks they "really" know what the Bible states.

A liberal approach to the Bible
It is difficult to separate the literary and religious aspects of the Bible, but the authors' focus is on the book "as literature" and in the space of 357 pages (in my copy of the 4th edition - 432 according to Amazon.com), they cover literary forms and strategies, historical and geographic settings, the major components of the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha and Pseudoepigrapha, and issues concerning the text and its translation. A valuable final chapter considers the religious use and interpretation of the Bible. Although the book is concise, it manages in its 18 chapters and 3 appendices to be comprehensive and is consistently readable. I find the sensible, scientific approach credible and while it frequently causes me to reflect on my religious beliefs, they are not seriously undermined by this liberal approach. I do not know of a better introduction to the Bible.

Wonderful
This book is great. I have Dr. Anthony York, one of the authors of this book,in class, and his book is wonderful. It really helps to see the various opinions of the bible. It is also great for people who want to study the bible as literature and not from a religious stand point.

The Diabetic's Book: All Your Questions Answered (Wheeler Large Print Book)
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (August, 1993)
Authors: June Biermann and Barbara Toohey
Average review score:

A Complicated Situation
I have the 1994 edition of this book. I looked it up on Amazon.com and the only customer reviewer said that it was outdated! And I wondered why it had not been updated. I compared the review with the picture and description by Amazon.com. Sure enough! 1994 was the last edition. The reviewer was correct. But I wrote a review anyway. And admitted I was wrong (which is highly unusual for me). Amazon.com printed my review but then updated their picture and description to a 1999 edition! Well, I can swing accolades at the book now. Just grab it and you will become interested in the question and answer format. It's an Advanced Dr. Seuss book for type 1 and 2 diabetics. My 78-year-old mother has never read a book on diabetes despite having obtained the disease 61 years ago at the age of 17. The psychological "shock" is horrible for ALL individuals. I tried to get her to read this book and that book for years. But this book is like Adam Khan's "Self-Help Stuff That Works". It's big and clumsy. Big bold questions which are followed by succinct answers. I will make an alsmost quarantee about this book. Or about any teen. If you buy the book and just hand it to them, it is very likely that they will read "some" of it. Because it is so user-friendly like Adam's book. Just leaf through it and you can put it down at anytime. NO COMMITTMENT! I love this book. I'm going to buy the updated copy real soon (within 30 days) and the "Diabetic for

Dummies" book which came out last year. She won't look at the Dummies book. But you just flip open this book and you're studying diabetes! Good luck. I'll review one more diabetes book for obsessive-compulsive math "freaks" like me who love strategies. Good luck and God bless.

OUTDATED?
I went through all of the books in a retail bookstore to find the very best book on diabetes for my mother. And this was the very best! It's wonderful! It poses the whole problem of diabetes for types 1 and 2 in a simple question and answer format. But the reviewer stated this book was outdated! I'll have to do a "run down" on this book. I voted for that reviewer. I'm not afraid to be wrong. JUST NOT SO OFTEN!

Outdated but an Excellent Reference
This is still my main reference after 4 years with diabetes. I'd recommend, though, that one buy the updated version, as things change so rapidly in medicine.

Sixteen Cows
Published in School & Library Binding by Harcourt Children's Books (08 April, 2002)
Authors: Lisa Wheeler and Kurt Cyrus
Average review score:

A rootin'-tootin' good read!
"Sixteen Cows" is one of those rare children's books that is not only fun for the kiddies, but may actually be more amusing for the adult reading it.

Lonely Cowboy Gene and lovely Cowgirl Sue share a fence, but despite their neighborliness and like herds of eight humorously named bovines, a bit of competition keeps the two at odds. The deus ex machina of a tornado rips down the fence and the cows do the rest, intermingling hopelessly, while refusing to hear the calls to come back to their respective sides. Forced to cooperate, the rival cowpokes finally drop the competition and work together. Can love be far behind?

Clearly there is plenty to like in the book. Many kids' picture books fall down in the text, but not here. Lisa Wheeler's long rhymes capture the reader's heart and flow nicely, complemented well by the sprawling, glowing, watercolor images of Kurt Cyrus. Together there is a synergy that makes this book oddly compelling. Little humorous touches abound - such as the cow names and the items tossed up by the tornado - that may mean more to adults than kids, so while my toddler son likes the book, his dad enjoys it even more. (At the cost of a star, the backstory of the book may be lost on the very young, who may not fully grasp love stories and weddings.)

With its large illustrations and silly/sweet story, this paean to the prairie is clearly designed to be read out loud and often. So pick out your best West Texas drawl, mosey on up to your favorite lil' pardner, and share the fun of "Sixteen Cows."

A Rootin' Tootin' Good Time.....
Meet Cowboy Gene Biddle and Cowgirl Sue Waddle, neighbors and cow lovers, living peacefully on the western prairie. Each went about their daily ranch chores until it was time to call their cows home. Then with a loud and strong voice, each would sing their "come-home song," calling every cow by name. "Now Waddle Ranch was on a hill and sat right next to Biddle./And where each ranch's pasture met, a fence ran down the middle./So Biddle cows and Waddle cows were not in any danger/of getting mixed at grazing time and dining with a stranger." That is, until a fierce Arkansas wind blew that old fence "plumb clean away." Now with their cows all mixed up, what are a couple of cowpokes going to do to separate their herds and bring them home..... Lisa Wheeler's spirited and engaging, happily ever after, good-time story, complete with western dialogue, begs to be read aloud. Her entertaining, rhyming text is full of energy, humor, and wild west fun. Kurt Cyrus' bold and busy artwork captures the story beautifully, and is rich in expressive and charming detail. Together this duo have authored a playful and silly "love story" that is sure to keep your little cowpokes smiling and giggling to the very last page. So find out how sixteen cows finally brought these two lonely ranchers together, and enjoy.

Romantic fun!
Our family loves this book! The rhyming text is an absolute delight to read aloud, and the story line is so much fun. The bridesmaid cows are hilarious. (Makes me want to go out and buy a cow!) This book will be read over and over again in our house. YEEHAW!
